Is chronic pain interfering with your quality of life, making it challenging to maintain work productivity, engage in social interactions, or get a good night’s rest? CBD may be just the solution you’ve been looking for.
Let’s briefly dig into the science behind CBD‘s potential to alleviate discomfort, opening up new possibilities for pain management.
Treating Arthritis
While ongoing research has not yet provided definitive data showing CBD as a proven treatment for arthritis, the Arthritis Foundation offers compelling anecdotal evidence. CBD users report experiencing pain reduction, improved sleep, and reduced anxiety with its use.
Animal research—like these 2016 and 2017 studies— suggests CBD can help treat inflammatory pain.
Neuropathic Pain
Neuropathic pain is commonly triggered by nerve-related injuries, leading to sensations such as tingling, numbness, weakness, and burning or stabbing feelings. For instance, multiple sclerosis is one disease that can cause neuropathic pain.
The good news is that CBD has been approved for MS treatment in numerous countries after undergoing several clinical trials. This treatment, known as Sativex, is a spray containing CBD and THC. Studies have indicated that a median dose of eight sprays might offer pain relief to individuals with MS.
Cancer Treatment Relief
CBD has also shown great promise in reducing nausea through its interactions with the body’s endocannabinoid system and serotonin receptors. This research is particularly intriguing for cancer patients who suffer from treatment-related nausea.
Currently, the FDA has approved two drugs derived from cannabis that can help with chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting—Nabilone and Dronabinol.
Migraine Relief
CBD has also shown potential in relieving migraines through its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). When CBD interacts with the ECS, it modulates pain signals, potentially reducing migraine symptoms.
In a recent 2022 study, researchers examined the effects of CBD and THC, compounds found in cannabis, on migraines. The study involved 79 individuals who suffer from migraines, split into two groups. One group received the commonly used migraine medication, amitriptyline, while the other group was given a combination of THC and CBD.
The results were intriguing. Both the THC+CBD treatment and amitriptyline showed similar effectiveness in reducing the frequency of migraine attacks for both groups. The participants experienced a decrease of about 40% in migraine occurrences. Notably, when an additional 200 mg of cannabinoids (THC+CBD) was given to the group already taking amitriptyline, the intensity of their headaches further decreased by approximately 43.5%.
