CBD may have been identified as a distinct compound from the marijuana plant more than 80 years ago, but the surge of interest surrounding cannabidiol (CBD) is a relatively recent development.
But why has CBD suddenly entered the spotlight?
The reasons are fairly clear—CBD’s therapeutic properties significantly benefit human health. From managing chronic pain in athletes to alleviating anxiety, treating sleep disorders, and even aiding in opioid addiction treatment, research is gradually dispelling skepticism about the health benefits associated with CBD extract.
But before delving into the specific health benefits, let’s begin by exploring what CBD extract is, what it isn’t, and how it differs from other cannabis compounds.
What is CBD Extract?
CBD extract, short for cannabidiol extract, is a natural compound derived from the cannabis plant. Unlike its well-known counterpart THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD does not produce a psychoactive “high” effect. Instead, it offers potential therapeutic benefits without the mind-altering properties commonly associated with cannabis.
While CBD and THC originate from the same plant, they differ greatly. THC is primarily responsible for the intoxicating effects of marijuana, whereas CBD offers a more calming and therapeutic effect.
So what are a few of the science-backed health benefits of CBD extract?
1. Reduces Anxiety and Depression
While there are a fortunate few who embrace public speaking, research consistently shows that the majority of people (72 to 75 percent, to be exact) experience fear and anxiety when faced with speaking in front of a crowd. But could CBD extract potentially alter these statistics?
Research by the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry suggests the answer is “yes.”
In a 2017 study, the anxiety levels of 57 men were examined during a simulated public speaking test. Participants were divided into groups, with some receiving a placebo and others receiving different doses of CBD (150mg, 300mg, or 600mg) prior to delivering their speeches. The group that received 300mg of CBD significantly reduced anxiety compared to the placebo group.
Surprisingly, the group that was given 600mg of CBD reported increased anxiety.
2. Alleviates Symptoms Associated with PTSD
Several studies have also shown CBD as a promising treatment that can alleviate PTSD symptoms, such as intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.
For example, a 2019 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that CBD, when administered shortly before or after exposure to a traumatic event, reduced anxiety and improved sleep in individuals with PTSD.
3. Limits Withdrawal and Addiction-Like Behaviors
Recent research suggests that CBD extract may potentially treat opioid addiction.
To be more specific, cannabinoid enzyme inhibitors like FAAH and MAGL have shown promise in reducing opioid withdrawal symptoms and curbing the desire for opioids.
MAGL inhibitors have also displayed positive effects in limiting withdrawal and addiction-like behaviors in animal studies. While these studies are promising, it’s worth noting that more research may be necessary to fully understand the effectiveness and safety of these inhibitors in humans.
4. Reduces the Frequency of Epileptic Seizures
In 2018, the FDA approved a CBD-based medication called Epidiolex for treating seizures associated with two rare forms of epilepsy.
The FDA’s decision to approve Epidiolex was based on three studies involving 516 patients diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome. These patients were randomly assigned to receive either Epidiolex or a placebo. The results of these studies demonstrated that when Epidiolex was used alongside other prescribed medications, it effectively reduced the frequency of seizures compared to the placebo.
5. Offers Chronic Pain Relief
CBD has demonstrated the potential to relieve chronic arthritis and joint pain. In addition, individuals with arthritis have reported pain relief, improved sleep, and reduced anxiety when using CBD.
Although research is ongoing, CBD oil also shows promise in alleviating common migraine symptoms like neck pain, soreness, nausea, and vomiting. Additionally, it may have potential benefits for individuals with multiple sclerosis, including reducing fatigue, pain, spasticity, and improving mobility.
